Born in Paris, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern olympic Games, was originally encouraged to follow a military career, but, convinced of the necessity to give an important place to physical education in the formation of the individual, he oriented himself toward the encouragement of sports. A product himself of the École libre des sciences politiques in Paris, Coubertin started to promote his ideas by publishing several articles and founding numerous sporting societies. In 1894, at a conference that brought together representatives from 14 nations, he proposed reviving the olympic Games. Two years later, Pierre de Cou-bertin created the International Olympic Committee, on which he served as president until 1925. The committee organized the first olympics (1896), which, symbolically, were held in Athens.
